Montpelier, Vermont has a population of fewer than eight thousand people, which makes it the smallest state capital in the United States (2). According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Vermont has the highest use of illicit drugs in the nation, from marijuana to cocaine (7). The number of people admitted to substance abuse treatment facilities has increased from 7,067 in 2001 to 8,195 in 2011 (8). The state of Vermont has also seen an increase in the use of prescription drugs, and the state has upped its funding to prevent and provide treatment options for those seeking treatment for addiction (9).
SAMHSA also reports that Vermont also has a higher-than-average percentage of the population diagnosed with mental illness (19.39 percent, compared with the national average of 18.19 percent) (10). There are 75 mental health and substance abuse treatment facilities in the state (11). Of the 2,090 social workers employed in the state, 840 of them work as mental health or substance abuse social workers (12).
Studying Social Work

Of these types of social workers, healthcare social workers should see the highest increase of job opportunities (percentage-wise); job growth for healthcare social workers is predicted at a rate of 19 percent (16). Mental health and substance abuse social workers an also expect to see an increase in job opportunities at a rate of 13 percent (17). The slowest growing sector in the state is for child, family and school social workers; job growth is expected to grow at a rate of nine percent (18).
Of all the social workers employed in the state, healthcare social workers are typically paid the highest. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the median wage for a healthcare social worker is $52,160. If you work in the Burlington area, you can expect a median salary of $63,970 (19).
